Botswana, located in South-Central Africa, has a land mass of 581,730 km² and a population of only 2.25 million people. It is one of the least densely populated countries on the planet. To gain perspective, it is almost 2.5 times the size of the United Kingdom but with a population of only 3.5% of its European counterpart.
It is widely regarded as the destination of choice for those wanting premium luxury and exclusivity. The safari infrastructure is built on low impact and high quality tourism. The result being large swathes of unspoilt land divided up into private safari concessions and managed by renowned and responsible local tour operators. This model ensures you are guaranteed the most authentic of experiences in a true wilderness area, void of human settlement and blessed by extremely low visitor numbers. However, it is worth noting this privilege comes at a price.
The Kalahari Desert dominates the topography of the country. However, this parched and uncompromising land is transformed into a verdant oasis by the life-giving waterways and floodplains of the incomparable Okavango Delta. It is here, in the north of the country, where the wildlife action takes centre stage. The private concessions of the Okavango Delta, with the Moremi Game Reserve as its centrepiece, the Linyanti Private Concessions and the Chobe National Park play host to huge numbers and diversity of game including impressive predator numbers. The dry reserves to the south include Nxai Pan National Park, Makgadikgadi National Park and the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. Although wildlife is not as populous here its appeal lies in the wilderness and the unusual wildlife sightings that can be found in this arid environment. Desert specials such as black-maned lions, caracal, brown hyena, aardwolf and the elusiveaardvark are often observed and the longest land mammal migration, the so-called Kalahari zebra migration, arrives here in the green season when the areas further north aren’t at their most prolific.
The accommodation on offer throughout the destination is largely aimed at the premium end of the market and manages to blend eco-tourism with the ultimate in luxury and service. The lodges offer you a wide range of safari activities ranging from day and night game drives, makoro safari, canoeing, walking safari, sleep out on the Kalahari salt pans, hot air balloon safari and even horseback safari.
Botswana is the perfect destination for all types of guests, from first timers in search of the big 5 and other flagship big game to experienced travellers wanting to get their first glimpse of the aforementioned desert-adapted wildlife.
