Mountain Gorilla Trekking - Ultimate Wildlife AdventuresMountain Gorilla Trekking

Embark on a journey of a lifetime into true African jungle and come face-to-face with one of our closest living relatives, the mountain gorilla. Looking into the eyes of a silverback gorilla whilst he nonchalantly snacks on bamboo shoots is a life-changing experience and one which will live with you forever.

With only approximately 1000 of these gentle giants remaining in the wild and daily visitor numbers capped, mountain gorilla trekking is both an exclusive and privileged experience. It is quite possibly the ultimate wildlife adventure.

In essence, mountain gorilla trekking is the experience of hiking alongside experienced and highly qualified guides through pristine African jungle in search of a family of these gentle primates. The feeling you will experience when you first lay eyes on a gorilla will be truly indescribable. The next hour of your life will be spent in the presence of these awe-inspiring creatures. They may be happy to feast and relax in your presence, you may witness a family dispute, or they may be playful and make inquisitive approaches towards you. Every experience is different.

Gorilla trekking is available in Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Mgahinga National Park in Uganda, and our preferable jungle, Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. You will trek in a group of no more than 8 tourists as well as your guides. This offers a very intimate experience. The duration of the trek depends on the location of your allocated gorilla family. However, on average it may take between 1-3 hours to locate the gorillas. The terrain can be difficult and the gorillas live at significant altitude. Therefore, a reasonable level of fitness and health is advised. Mountain gorillas move over relatively large areas overnight so their whereabouts isn’t predictable. It is worth noting the minimum age for this activity is 15 years.

Would you prefer an even more intimate experience? If so you’ll be pleased to know we also design trips to include a mountain gorilla habituation experience. This enables you to spend 4 hours with a family of gorillas who are currently going through the habituation process. You will join researchers, scientists, guides, and a maximum of 3 other tourists in the slow process of mountain gorilla habituation. It is a sensational and unique experience and one that very few have embarked upon.

Gorilla trekking can be designed in isolation as a short whistle stop trip but more often than not we are asked to incorporate this experience into a much larger itinerary. Gorilla trekking is available in Rwanda and Uganda. These areas link well with the quintessential African plains of Tanzania and Kenya, as well as the beaches of the Zanzibar archipelago.

It is heart-warming to know that by choosing to visit a family of gorillas you are directly conserving and protecting them from extinction as money used from the trekking permit is used in their ongoing daily protection.
