Pemba IslandPemba Island is the northernmost island of the 3 main Zanzibar Archipelago Islands, the others being Zanzibar and Mafia. At 988 km² it is roughly half the size of Zanzibar but twice the size of Mafia. Located 40 kilometres north of Zanzibar it is relatively remote but still has good aviation access from the mainland via Zanzibar.
Pemba is an extremely authentic island and tourism hasn’t yet taken off here. It receives less than 1% of the visitors of its larger cousin further south. There are only a handful of good quality lodges that would be deemed suitable for most western visitors. This adds to its allure as mass development has not yet taken over ensuring the island has retained its authentic feel.
Pemba is not renowned for its beach scene and in fact the beaches here, pretty much like Mafia Island, are significantly inferior to those of Zanzibar Island.
So who should come to Pemba Island? In one word. Divers. Pemba is a mecca of diving and has some of the most challenging and advanced dive sites in the world. Combine this with the strong currents and it really is only suitable for experienced divers.
We only recommend Pemba to those wanting to combine safari on the mainland with marine wildlife experiences or indeed those wanting to just dive as a complete holiday.
We have included Pemba in some popular itineraries below for your perusal however these are for inspiration only and are completely flexible.
