Tanzania, arguably the most complete safari destination on the African continent, offers authentic and high quality wildlife experiences to suit a wide variety of traveller desires and budgets.
Located in East Africa and occupying a land mass of 945,203 km² it is almost 4 times larger than the United Kingdom. Astonishingly, approximately 40% of its land has been designated to national parks or game and nature reserves. These protected areas, diverse and even unique, offer you unforgettable and occasionally unimaginable experiences.
The national parks and reserves are divided into circuits based on their geographical location. These being, the northern circuit, southern circuit and western circuit. However, as you will discover, our logistical expertise and adventurous approach often encourages us to design itineraries using parks and reserves from more than one circuit.
The northern circuit is the circuit of choice for the majority of safari visitors to the country. It is relatively easy to access, has a wide variety of accommodation types and offers spectacular wildlife viewing in abundance. The Serengeti National Park, home of the famous wildebeest migration and hot air balloon safari, is undoubtedly the crown in its jewel. UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Ngorongoro Crater, provides Big 5 game viewing and more in abundance whilst the lesser known but no less impressive Tarangire National Park is renowned as being one of the most impressive places in Africa to view large herds of migratory elephants.
The southern circuit, slightly more difficult to access but perfect for fly-in safaris, is preferred by those travellers still wanting to observe the diversity and abundance of wildlife but preferring a more secluded and remote setting. Accommodation is often in smaller and more intimate bush camps therefore lending itself more to experienced and outdoorsy type travellers. Ruaha National Park, the largest in the country, is amongst the best places in Africa for getting seriously up close and personal on a walking safari. The largest reserve in the whole of Africa, the Selous Game Reserve is home to exceptional water-based activities.
The western circuit is aptly named the wild west and for good reason. Mahale Mountains National Park, widely regarded as the best place in the world to observe wild chimpanzees, is a reward beyond comparison for those who make the effort to visit. Katavi National Park, host to some of the largest concentrations of buffalo, hippopotamus and crocodiles in Africa, is the safari enthusiasts dream destination. Visitor numbers are extremely low and despite the vastness of the national park it wouldn’t be unheard of to have the entire park to yourself.
Tanzania’s advantageous geographical location, sharing land borders with 8 other African countries and the Indian Ocean islands, make it a perfect destination in which to link other areas. It is an obvious choice should you wish to combine traditional safari with beach relaxation or with mountain gorilla trekking in Uganda for instance.
